Cushmic Sounds is pleased to offer on consignment this sought after vintage Gibson Southern Jumbo from 1950 in original factory Sunburst nitro finish.
Factory Order No. (FON) #3810 23 (Ink Stamp on Neck Block)
Introduced in 1942, the Southern Jumbo model was the "Deluxe" version of the iconic J-45. While it shares the same round-shoulder dreadnought shape and basic tone wood configuration, the Southern Jumbo is distinguished by its aesthetic upgrades, including split parallelogram Mother-of pearl fingerboard inlays, multi-ply body binding on the front, back and sound hole, and a slightly different (slimmer) neck profile.
Weighing in at just 1.87kg (4.12lbs) with a 2-piece Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides, original Mahogany set-neck with super comfortable rounded "C" shape neck profile, Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, 22 replacement (vintage-correct) frets, Mother-of-pearl split parallelogram inlays, and original Bone nut.
NOTE: The nut has a small chip at the Bass side. After spending time with this lovely guitar the string does not slip and sits perfectly, so due to originality I have decided to keep it in place. Should you wish to have the nut replaced or repaired, I will be happy to do so after purchase at no extra cost.
Caliper measurements:
Nut width: 43.25mm (1.702")
Neck width at 12th fret: 52.58mm (20.70")
Neck depth at 1st fret: 21.89mm (0.862")
Neck depth at 10th fret: 25.98mm (1.023")
Original/Replacement parts:
- Original Bone nut
- 22 replacement (vintage-correct) frets
- Original Brazilian Rosewood bridge with Mother-of-pearl inlays
- Original Bone saddle
- Original bridge pins
- Original individual "Single-Line" Kluson Deluxe tuners with original white buttons still in place
- Original teardrop tortoiseshell celluloid pickguard is still in place.
- Original Truss Rod cover
Comes with its original Gibson Hardshell Case. All latches and handle are in functional working order.
Serviced and restrung here at Cushmic Sounds with D'Addario XS 12-53, 80/20 Bronze strings, frets polished, fretboard cleaned, truss rod tested and works as it should.
There is noticeable wear to the Rosewood fingerboard toward the nut, replacement frets are in very good condition with the first 5 showing minor wear, action is slightly higher than what I would prefer but it's not outrageous and still really playable. This is an excellent vintage Gibson acoustic with lovely depth and clarity with every note, an absolute joy to play!
Overall condition is Good. No breaks or structural cracks, all internal bracing is firmly in place. Just a whole lotta honest play wear. This beauty was played and loved for a reason.
